Frequently Asked Questions

What is Manual Lymph Drainage?

Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) is a lymphatic massage technique refined to help with many illnesses like respiratory and sinus issues, by reducing inflammation, by Dr Emile Vodder, Phd and his wife, Estrid Vodder. MLD has been part of an international 4 part protocol for treatment of Lymphedema for over one hundred years. I trained under Guenter Klose who was trained at the Foldi institute in Germany and who has now trained therapists in the U.S. for many years. For people with lymphedema I use this technique to drain, and improve lymph flow in the entire body, not just the limbs affected. MLD is the base of all my treatments.

Lymph Drainage Massage (LDM) is a massage with a base of MLD mixed with Lymph Drainage Therapy, another modality I’ve trained in, and other modalities I’ve trained in sprinkled in as needed. The way I see it flow needs to happen, body structures need to glide over one another whether that is accomplished with a Swedish technique or Myofascial Release technique or Craniorsacral Therapy technique.

The way I distinguish the difference between the two is that MLD is for Edema, Lymphedema and Lipedema per international protocol and Lymph Drainage Massage is for illness, post-op, , detox, arthritis, inflammation. Head injury, Etc.

People who have had surgery recently to people who don’t seem to be recovering completely from surgery or illness. Any Autoimmune disorders or Lyme disease and Lyme co-infections. EDS patients do well with lymph drainage massage. For head injury patients draining the neck and back of head  helps their brain fog, in my experience. With most of these conditions it would take at least 4 twice weekly or weekly lymph drainage sessions to complete the work and then maintenance treatments monthly or weekly for some.

Janelle Cline

LMT, CLT, RN (ret)

My training in craniosacral therapy taught me about the effect restrictions have in the body; When there are restrictions in our tissues, the body has to work harder to achieve balance or homeostasis. Manual Lymph Drainage and Lymph Drainage Massage are greatly needed healing modalities focusing on the stress that inflammation and swelling cause the body which in turn triggers lists of dis-ease states.

In 2017 I earned my Certified Lymphedema Therapist, (CLT) I focus on the manual lymph drainage and refer out to physical therapists certified in lymphedema/lipedema treatment for compression and treatment of lymphedema and lipedema. Coming for regular MLD treatments is key to maintenance and a sense of well-being when managing lymphedema and lipedema.

I am listed in the International Association of HealthCare Practitioners at http://www.iahp.com/pages/search/ and am a member of Associated Bodywork and Massage Professionals (ABMP). I am also listed on the Klose training website for Lymphedema certified therapists at Klosetraining.com
